progressive vaccinia

progressive vaccinia
a rare but often fatal complication of smallpox vaccination, seen most often in immunodeficient persons, characterized by tissue necrosis that spreads from the inoculation site and may result in metastatic vaccinial lesions in the skin, bones, and viscera. Called also v. gangrenosa.
