methacetin breath test
(for liver function) a breath test in which the fasting patient is administered a dose of methacetin labeled with carbon 13 and breath levels of carbon dioxide are measured at regular intervals; low levels of carbon dioxide indicate liver dysfunction such as cirrhosis.
