tropical splenomegaly syndrome

tropical splenomegaly syndrome
a syndrome of massive splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, anemia, and elevated serum IgM levels that occurs in some areas where malaria is endemic, such as parts of sub-Saharan Africa and New Guinea. Lymphocytic infiltrates are present in hepatic sinusoids, and the association with chronic malarial infection is suggested by a polyclonal increase in IgM, a very high titer of IgM antibodies to Plasmodium falciparum, and often by a therapeutic response to malarial chemoprophylaxis. Called also tropical splenomegaly.
